Godzilla vs Miraga
Prologue

Date: Summer: 2004
Location: Tokyo, Japan
As I remember it... Tokyo was beautiful that year. The buildings were the highest ever. After our miraculous recovery from WWII, we started rebuilding Japan. It was beautiful. Yes...but just 9 years after Japans darkest hour, a new dark shroud covered Japans history. Godzilla...a 55-meter tall monster born from Hydrogen bomb tests, wreaked havoc on Tokyo. It spewed it’s radioactive fire everywhere. It was as if another bomb was dropped there. The fires lasted for months...but we managed to beat the creature...the ‘Oxygen Destroyer’ disintegrated the monster...or so Japan and the rest of the world thought...but I was there... I know what really happened...I was a member of the crew who gathered the very first collection of Godzilla cells...
Date: Spring: 1954
Location: Pacific Ocean
Four days after the use of the ‘Oxygen Destroyer’ on Godzilla,
Dr. Yumani had ordered a thorough search party for the body of the creature. Although his daughter Emiko had told him, after witnessing an actual display of the ‘OxyDestroyer’, as it came to be called, that there was no possible way the monster could have survived it...he insisted it be found.
But what many, almost the entire world, didn’t know, was that Dr. Yumani had participated in the creation of not only the ‘OxyDestroyer’, but, as unbelievable as it may sound, Godzilla.
He was in charge of the placement of the bomb test that created Godzilla. He was, at the time, unaware of it, but he figured out through a process of elimination, that he was partly responsible for the destruction of Tokyo, Japan.

Chapter 1
To keep his reputation in good regards, he asked that his involvement in the placement of the bomb test be kept in the highest amount of secrecy possible. The knowledge of his involvement was concealed and everyone who knew was told to keep quiet. I came across this knowledge by accident. My son, Kiyo Yugasawara, who is now 27, was working in some files in a burnt down government building, and found a file with the title- ‘Yumani: Classified‘. He recognized the name because as he was growing up, I’d tell him stories that when I was real young, I had worked for brilliant scientist named ’Yumani’.
He hid the files under his overcoat. He brought them to me, and as I started to read them, I sat stunned.
“Father, what’s wrong? Why are you just sitting there? What do they say?” he asked.
“They are about the man I worked for when I was a few years younger than you.” I replied.
“Ohh...uh, I can’t think of his name...what was it again?” he asked.
“Dr. Yumani.” I told him.
“Yeah that’s it...so what do they say about him?” he asked.
The look on my face was enough to get him prepared for this.
“They say he took part in an atom bomb test. He chose the exact location for it.” I told him in a grim tone.
“So...big hairy deal. So he chose the location.” he said.
“Son...in this day and age, they don’t mean anything to you, but to me...I mean the man was an anti-nuclear protagonist!” I declared.
“Ohh...I had no idea dad...I’m sorry. I’ll get you more info tonight.” That night, he went to the burnt down office building and dug through some rubble and pieces of charred wood. It became very late. I was worried. ‘What if he was caught by the police?’ I thought. A few minutes later the door swung open and along with some new files in his hand, a newspaper curled into a roll.
“You have some new files for me?” I asked.
“Yes but never mind them, look at this!” he exclaimed.
He handed me the paper, and as I unrolled it, the words ‘Nuclear Submarine Disaster’ struck me.
That was the headlines on the late edition paper by the ‘Tokyo Star’. It told how a Russian nuclear sub had sunk off the coast of the Ogasawaran islands. It had a small caption under the headlines: ‘Could this be the work of Godzilla?’.
I wondered how they could bring up the suggestion of a creature that’s been dead for 50 years. Were they trying to cause a panic? I decided to ignore this for now. I wanted to see the files he brought me. I set the paper down and asked for the files.
Kiyo handed them to me and I noticed a strange looking file. It said: ‘Government Classified: Top Secret’.
I opened that one with much excitement, and the thing
that struck me first was the mention of a certain thing that
has been wanted for years...G-cells. The very mention
of these items sent chills down my spine. Let me explain...
Date: Spring, 1954
Location: Pacific ocean, just off
the coast of the Ogasawaran Islands
I was told we were a clean up crew, sent to find the body of Godzilla and clean up the mess caused by the ’OxyDestroyer’.
I honestly had no idea why were at the coast of the Ogasawaran Islands. They said Godzilla’s body, if intact, would be somewhere at the bottom of the Ogasawaran trench. Only the bravest of divers volunteered to dive that deep. Four were sent down and only three came up. The one that was missing was pulled up an hour later with his helmet crushed in. He was told not to dive deeper than the others. But he insisted, and he paid dearly. The others said they could find absolutely no body or anything of Godzilla. But about an hour before the boat was set to leave, a deck hand spotted what he thought was another school of dead fish washed ashore in the aftermath of the ’OxyDestroyer’. The boat was docked on the island and it was discovered that that was no school of dead fish, but a small pile of g-cells that had come off Godzilla’s body. The doctor ordered an immediate clean up of the cells and he ordered them be sent to his laboratory in Osaka. I, being a student interested nuclear physiology, requested to help in the study of the cells. I was granted permission and I was given a C-9 clearance pass, which allowed me access to his laboratory at any time.
The cells were interesting. We conducted many tests on the ones we had. Other’s were stored in freezing tanks for later use.
But one terrible evening we returned from dinner at a fancy restaurant called ‘Torahaki’ to find our lab-mate Goro dead in the lab. He had a haz-mat mask over his face but his body was...it was terrible. We didn’t even open the doors to the lab for fear of radiation. Which was the reason Goro had died. His body had been bombarded by overly deadly amounts of radiation. More radiation than an atomic bomb gives off. The cells were deemed ’un-useable’ after a study showed that when the G-cells actually die(which took about 2 weeks), they give off the radiation stored in them. They were taken out to a toxic-waste site a buried 15 miles under the earths surface in biohazard tanks. The only feasible knowledge of that incident is in my hands right now. I was told never to speak of the incident. Or of the studies on the cells. Or even of the presence of them. But now... with the submarine accident, I fear secrets will be uncovered...

Chapter 2

Date: Summer: 2004
Location: Tokyo, Japan
“A Russian U-633 Class-H submarine was apparently sunk off the coast of the Ogasawaran Islands late today. Divers are being dispatched as of right now. Russian officials said that a mayday signal was recorded at 7:33 PM and they recorded the sound of an explosion in the background. No official word on whether another submarine or mechanical failure was the cause. All 45 crewmen are presumed dead.”
That was the main story of last nights paper. I didn’t know what to think. As I skimmed the page for anything interesting, a part in the same story caught my eye...
“Another possible reason for the sinking of the Submarine dubbed ‘The Kosiick II’ is Godzilla. Japanese officials have no comment as to whether this disaster was caused by the terror that nearly wiped Tokyo off the map 50 years ago.”
The nerve of those reporters bringing something like that up over a little submarine sinking. I felt for those sailors, I really did, but why bring up suspicions that are probably false? I felt I needed more info so I went down to our local grocery store and bought a morning edition newspaper from the ’Tokyo Star’. I found a new article about the submarine sinking. It
said this:
“New evidence suggests that a malfunction in the nuclear reactor of the submarine caused a small fire. The fire spread unnoticed until it reached the main quarters of the ship. The fire was so out of control by then that it simply could not be contained. The captain ordered an immediate rise to the surface. But it was too late. The fire had spread to the missile chamber. With five minutes left until reaching the surface, there was simply no way to avoid this disaster. The fire caused a chain reaction among the missiles. Once one went off...the rest went with it. It was simply a malfunction in the engine. No need to cause a panic.”
I was outraged upon reading that despicable sentence. “No need to cause a panic.” Fools! They were the ones causing a panic. Bringing up words of Godzilla. I read on:
“One cause for concern is the missing nuclear fuel that runs the reactor on the ship. Scientists say there is no cause for alarm as the material has fallen deep into the Ogasawaran trench. Scientist Yugama Orika had this to say: ‘The material used to run the reactor is Uranium235. But the Uranium has sunk so far down that our divers haven’t even thought of venturing that far down. The reason the Kosiick II was in the Ogasawaran area was because they had picked up signals of active sonar.’
When asked what would have active sonar out that far, Mr. Orika had this to say: ‘There is absolutely nothing out there that would have active sonar. We think it could have been a glitch in their operating systems.’ Could it have been a glitch? More reports coming.”
The mention of the Ogasawaran trench and the active sonar finally stirred the emotions in me about Godzilla still being alive.
Kiyo came home later that night with a couple more files. He gave them to me and said “The news is buzzing about the sunk sub. People are shouting that Godzilla is back. What do you think pops?” I couldn’t think of an appropriate way of saying I might agree so I asked him to get me a cup of hot tea. He knew I didn’t know how to answer his question and said “That's what I thought.”
“I’m not completely sure son. It’s just that...active sonar? And at the bottom of the Ogasawaran trench?” I said.
“Ahhhhhh...your assuming it came from the bottom of the trench.” he said.
“Look, I’m only saying...it’s a giant coincidence don’t you think?” I snapped.
“Yeah, sure dad. Look I gotta go help with the rest of the clean up at the office building. I’ll be back in a few hours.”
I went through the files he brought me. There were a few more files on the g-cells and what we did with them. But I found a small cassette tape in the one. It wasn’t a cassette like the ones now a days...but older. It went to an old news reporter recording machine. I dug up my old one of those and popped the tape in and hit the playback button. It started out all scratchy but then the sound of an older males voice came on. I knew it straight away. Dr. Yamane. He said this:
“Dr. Serwizawa and I plotted the Oxygen Destroyer together. I told him of my suspicion that a creature may have been on the island I chose. I told him to make it as deadly as he could. He showed me how it worked on fish. But he told me it would only work on animals that breathed the water with gills. I told him that it would have to do. That is the reason he showed only my daughter. He knew that if she told me, I’d understand and not make a giant scene about it. I fear Godzilla is not dead. I have ordered a search party to look for it’s remains. Heaven help if the creature lives...”

Chapter 3

The tape stopped and rewound. I sat there stunned. My body tensed up. I didn’t blink for about 5 minutes. I didn’t know what to think. We found no corpse. But we found a heaping pile of g-cells. My mind went blank. I jumped to my feet as some lightning flashed in the sky. I had a sudden flashback. I was in a train the day Godzilla attacked. I was in the second to the last train car. I remember reading that evenings news paper...when the train suddenly came to a screeching halt. I was slammed into the seat ahead of me. I remember looking over the seat to the door that lead to the car in front of us. A woman screamed and soon the rest of the car joined in. The train car in front of us was broke off...and I saw it...I ran to the front of the train and popped my head out and saw a creature uglier than anything I’ve ever seen. It put the train car in it’s mouth and bit down. I heard people from inside the car scream. A young woman’s body fell from the car and fell right in front of me...
I flashed back to reality. I had broken into a cold sweat. I laid there for hours...thinking...praying...hoping that something like that would never happen again. Another flash of lightning lit up the room. I decided to go to bed. I’m 68 and I cant stand situations like these. So I retired to the good old bed.
The next morning I set out for the store again to find today’s paper. The morning was crisp and refreshing. Guess that’s the way it was after a good storm like the night before. I bought a drink called Sprite: Green. I thought I’d try it because I had saw a commercial on TV for it. It wasn’t bad. Tasted like watermelon. As I drank some more I noticed a small article in the paper about some people getting attacked last night. It said:
‘Shogo Yatihama, Didake Torahima and Zy Ming had been wandering around the city drunk during last nights storm when they stumbled into a off-limits area that had a small shack and spent the night. Around midnight they say they felt the ground shake and they say Ming was forcibly pulled under the ground by some kind of creature. A rescue team was dispatched around four o’clock in the morning to search for Ming’s body. Still no remains have been found. A shred of his clothing was found about twelve feet under the ground where he laying.
More coming with the Noon Edition Newspaper.’
More good news I thought. Kiyo walked in the door with the most grim of face’s I have ever seen. I asked him what was wrong.
“Father, another ship has been sunk off the coast of Kyushu.” he said.
“What do you mean...‘another’?” I asked.
“Well this time it was a cruise liner headed for South Korea, sailing from Tokyo bay all the way to South Korea. The ship was around Kyushu when it made an urgent SOS over the radio and said they were blinded by a sudden flash of light and the sea turned to foam and then the transmission was cut off.” he replied.
“Any survivors?” I asked.
“We have no idea...we cant find the ship.” he said.
“Didn’t the ship give it’s co-ordinates?” I asked.
“Yes...very clearly...but when me and the rest of the crew got there, there was NOTHING. We sent our mini-sub down there and we found nothing. No bodies, no wreckage...nothing.”
We talked for awhile longer. I took in everything he had said. The one thing that caught me was the blinding light and the foaming water. I asked him to drive me to the coast guards base. While we were driving there, I turned on the radio and got the last part of a song and then the news came on.
“This is the late breaking news with Hiro Kojime. The top story on our news is that the body of Zy Ming has finally been found this evening around 6 PM. After digging nearly 300 feet down, the body of Ming was found by following small pieces of clothing down to his body. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the doctor there. While being lifted from the gigantic hole he was in, Ming suddenly sprang back to life. The doctor was absolutely astounded by his coming back to life. Once Ming was safely on the ground, he was asked by officials what happened. While his answers were slurred, he said that a giant claw had grabbed him by his legs and violently dragged him deep into the ground. He said it looked like the claw of a lobster or a scorpion. The way he described though, was it being gigantic and enormous. Soon after his miraculous revival, he went into convulsions and they rushed him to the hospital. No word as of yet on what has caused his sudden convulsions. More at 11. Comin up next on 98PXY...its Julienne Yang with ‘Fire-starter’...”
“Well good for him...at least he’s alive.” said Kiyo.
“Yes but what a mystery...a giant claw?” I said.
“Who knows dad...the guy was under a lot of stress...he was dead...then alive...poor guy.” he replied.
“I guess...” I said.
“Ahhh...here we are...the coast guard base.”
We went inside to the front desk and Kiyo flashed his pass at the desk jockey. She permitted us to go in and we went straight
to the radio room. Kiyo told me to wait at the door. He went over to a bulky guy in a blue tie and they exchanged a few words and finally Kiyo motioned for me to come over to him. He directed me to the machine that had the recording on it. He hit the playback button and it started:
“SOS! SOS! Mayday! This is the Carubian SeaFish calling the coast guard! MAYDAY! The ship wa(static) when the sea lit up (static)in a firey mess! There was a blinding flash of light!....... OHHH!
Do you guys hear it?! It’s here! It’s(static)oming! There it wa(static)again! It’s gon.........”
“That’s it?” I asked.
“That’s all that was recorded before it went off air.” the bulky man replied.
“Can you get it a bit louder?” I asked.
“Sure thing...what part?” he asked.
“The part where he said ‘Do you guys hear it?’, just a few seconds before it. Please.”
“Uh huh...hold on a sec...” he said
“.....................skreeeeeeeeeoonnnnggggkkkk...OHHH! DO YOU GUYS HEAR IT? IT’S HERE...” he stopped it there.

“What the hell...................was that noise?” the bulky man asked.
“I know what it is...” I said, “I know what it is and I wish I didn’t.”
“What?! What was it?” Kiyo asked.
“It was...Godzilla.”
